How to access the computer setup (BIOS) on many brand name computers

To Enter the BIOS, please check the chart below for the key that will allow you to enter the BIOS Set Up. Please shut down your computer. Then power it back on holding down the appropriate key.

Note: Please keep in mind that the BIOS is not part of windows. If you get the windows screen, you have not done the procedure properly. If you are unsure as to how to enter the BIOS or the key on the list does not work, please contact your computer manufacturer.

Once you have entered the BIOS. You will want to locate the COM Port. It is usually listed under the Advanced Menu, however it can be under I/O devices, Integrated Devices or just COM or Serial Port.

Once you have found the settings menu for the COM/Serial Port. You will want to make sure it is not set to AUTO. If it is you will want to change it to a physical address. This should be 3F8/IRQ4, COM 1, ENABLED, or some other variation of this. (COM 1 or ENABLED will, by default set the COM PORT to the address of 3F8/IRQ 4, which is the address that will enable the port.)

Once you have your settings changed, you want to save and exit (Generally this is F10 or ESC.).
