MM = million

Finance系の話では、アメリカでは、million のことを MMと書くことも多い。
例えば、売上が1 million dollarの時に、$1MM という具合に。

なぜこう書くのか、常々疑問であった。
今日 Acronym Finderで逆引きをいろいろしていて、おそらくこれが元ではないかと納得できる内容に結論づけた。

ローマ数字で 1000のことをM と表す。つまり、million は 1000 of 1000なので、M of M, つまり MMというわけだ。
ホントのところは、II が 2 であるように、MMは 2000を表す。たぶん、表記としては正確ではないが、意味的にそれっぽいのでそういう習慣ができた、ということではないか。


実際、Wikipediaにも
In traditional accounting practice, M designates thousand or thousands (from the Latin mille), and MM is used for million. Hence such traditional abbreviations as CPM for cost per thousand items of a retail good, or MCF for thousand cubic feet of (e.g.) natural gas.
と書かれている。


ちなみに、billion は B、thousand は K か M と書くこともあるし、上記サイト他によると、1000 が M, 1 billionは MMMと書くことも一応あるようだ。（見たことないけど）
